On July 27th, 2023, the "Inside Listed Companies" series of Alliance Institute's "China Digital Energy Entrepreneurs" program officially kicked off in Shenzhen. As the first stop in this innovation hub, participants visited Tencent (00700)—a global internet giant and benchmark enterprise in China's internet industry—embarking on an in-depth visit and exchange learning journey.
In the morning, the participants arrived at Tencent's Towers located in Nanshan, Shenzhen. This distinctive, futuristic building itself is a physical manifestation of Tencent's innovative spirit. As a world-leading internet technology company, Tencent has operated for over two decades, evolving from a chat software company into a comprehensive internet ecosystem enterprise with businesses spanning social networking, gaming, finance, cloud and enterprise services, entertainment, and culture.
In the corporate exhibition hall, participants gained a comprehensive understanding of Tencent's development journey through rich exhibition content. From its difficult start in 1998, to the nationwide popularity of QQ, to the emergence of WeChat reshaping the mobile internet landscape; from taking root in the consumer internet, to embracing the industrial internet, to deeply participating in the construction of Digital China—each step of Tencent's development reflects the vigorous vitality and infinite possibilities of China's internet industry.

During the visit, Tencent's mission and philosophy of "User First, Technology for Good" left a deep impression on the participants. The exhibition hall is filled with attention to user experience and the pursuit of technology for social good. From the "Digital Dunhuang" project helping to preserve traditional culture, to the "For Village" plan promoting rural revitalization, to the various convenient services rapidly deployed during the COVID-19 pandemic—Tencent is constantly exploring new paths to solve social problems using digital technology.
In the public welfare exhibition area, participants learned that Tencent has been committed to philanthropy for many years, with cumulative donations exceeding RMB 10 billion. Through the Tencent Charitable Platform, hundreds of millions of netizens are connected to participate in micro-philanthropy. This development philosophy of integrating commercial value with social value gave participants a deeper understanding of corporate social responsibility.
Through detailed explanations from the guide, the participants gained systematic insight into Tencent's business portfolio. In the consumer internet sector, Tencent operates two national-level applications—QQ and WeChat—which together form a digital life platform connecting over 1.3 billion users. In digital entertainment, Tencent is a leading global game publisher and developer, with numerous phenomenon-level products under its umbrella. In the content industry, Tencent has built a full-industry chain ecosystem covering literature, music, film and television, and animation through platforms such as China Literature, Tencent Music, and Tencent Video.
In the industrial internet sector, Tencent Cloud serves as a trusted partner for digital transformation, serving more than one million enterprise customers. Particularly in the energy industry, Tencent Cloud is actively promoting the deep integration of cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence with the energy sector, helping energy enterprises achieve digital transformation and intelligent development. This was also the area of greatest interest to the Digital Energy Entrepreneurs.
To further promote exchange and dialogue between enterprises, the Digital Energy Entrepreneurs held a special symposium at Tencent's Seafront Towers. Zhang Ruijun, Head of Tencent Cloud Energy Industry for North China, and Zhu Feng, Chief Solution Architect of Tencent Cloud Energy Industry, attended the meeting and delivered special presentations.
At the symposium, Zhang Ruijun first introduced Tencent Cloud's overall strategy in the energy industry. He pointed out that in response to the era's demands for carbon neutrality goals, the energy industry is undergoing profound transformation. Tencent Cloud, leveraging its technological expertise in cloud computing, big data, IoT, and artificial intelligence, can provide comprehensive support for energy enterprises—from infrastructure cloud migration, data governance, and business innovation to ecosystem construction.
Zhu Feng, from a technical architecture perspective, shared practical cases of how Tencent Cloud has assisted the energy industry in its digital transformation. Using scenarios such as smart power plants, smart grids, smart oil and gas, and integrated energy services, he elaborated on how digital technology empowers efficiency improvement and value creation across energy production, transmission, and consumption. Through constructing digital twin platforms, real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance of energy equipment are achieved; through AI algorithm optimization, prediction accuracy and grid integration efficiency of new energy generation are improved; through energy big data analysis, energy-saving potential and business model innovation are explored. This series of vivid cases filled the participants with expectations for the future of energy digitalization.
During the subsequent communication session, the participants, drawing on their own corporate practices, engaged in heated and in-depth discussions with the two experts. Some participants focused on the assetization and value mining of energy data; others explored the challenges of cloud computing implementation in the energy industry; still others exchanged views on the pain points and countermeasures for digital transformation of traditional energy enterprises. The experts responded to each question, and the atmosphere was relaxed and dynamic, with new ideas generated through the exchange.
Through a full day of visits and exchanges, the participants gained a deeper understanding of Tencent's path to success. From initial imitation and innovation, to later micro-innovation, and now leading the way in cutting-edge technology fields, Tencent has always maintained an unwavering commitment to innovation. Whether through establishing multiple future laboratories to explore frontier technology, or stimulating innovation vitality through internal competition mechanisms, or empowering ecosystem partners through open platforms—innovation has been deeply integrated into Tencent's DNA.
Data shows that Tencent holds over 100,000 patents worldwide, with R&D investment continuing to grow—exceeding RMB 60 billion in 2022. It is this long-term commitment to innovation that enables Tencent to maintain its leading position in the ever-changing tides of the internet industry.
This visit to Tencent proved highly rewarding for the Digital Energy Entrepreneurs. On one hand, through on-site visits, they experienced firsthand the development logic and innovative culture of an internet giant. On the other hand, through in-depth exchanges with Tencent experts, they gained clearer understanding of the technical pathways and practical experiences in energy digitalization.
More importantly, Tencent's philosophy of "Technology for Good" and its open, cooperative ecosystem thinking brought cross-sector inspiration to the participants. In the era of the digital economy, no industry can remain aloof. Only by embracing change and open cooperation can enterprises find new growth space amid transformation. For the energy industry, deep integration with internet technology is giving birth to new formats, new models, and new possibilities.
The first day's Tencent visit concluded successfully amidst the participants' ongoing discussions and reflections. This was not only a tour of a renowned enterprise but also an in-depth exchange that sparked ideas and connected with the future. Tencent's innovative spirit, user-oriented thinking, and open ecosystem will all become valuable learning assets for the participants.
